Lockpicking Guide

Gothic 1 Remake Lockpicking Guide

Understand how connected sliders behave, preserve your lockpicks, and decide when training with Fingers is worth the LP and ore.

Quick Answer

Move every lock slider into its correct position, but expect one slider to affect others. Test connections methodically, avoid pushing a pin past its limit, and train with Fingers so mistakes are less punishing.

Sliders move connected sliders

How the lockpicking puzzle works

A lock contains a row of vertical sliders. The goal is to place every slider in the correct position at the same time. The complication is that moving one slider may move one or more connected sliders, so solving the lock requires learning its relationships rather than adjusting each pin independently.

Test one slider at a time

Start by moving a single slider once and watch the entire lock. Note which other sliders rise or fall with it, then reverse the move if possible before testing the next slider.

Do not force a slider past its limit

Trying to move a slider beyond its available range counts as a failure and damages the current pick. Look for pins already near the top or bottom before choosing the next direction.

Solve linked groups, not isolated pins

When several sliders affect one another, first place the slider with the broadest effect, then use more limited sliders to correct the remaining positions. Random movement wastes picks quickly on larger locks.

Train Lockpicking with Fingers

Fingers lives in an elevated hut along the inner wall of the Old Camp. From the castle entrance, turn left and continue past Snaf's cooking area, then look up the slope for his hut. You can attempt locks without training, but skill tiers give you more room to learn each puzzle.

Lockpicking Trained

The Trained tier costs 10 LP and 100 ore. A pick survives four failed moves, and breaking one does not reset all of the progress already made inside the lock.

Lockpicking Master

The Master tier lets a pick survive six failed moves and disables one connection inside the puzzle, reducing how many sliders interfere with one another.

When the investment is worth it

Train early if you regularly rob buildings or open quest chests. A combat-focused character can delay Master, but the first tier saves time and lockpicks throughout the game.

Where to buy and find lockpicks

Lockpicks appear as loot in prisoner camps, homes, and containers, but early supply is inconsistent. Two merchants in the Old Camp market provide a reliable fallback.

Buy from Mordrag

Mordrag sits on a bench outside a shack on the eastern side of the cloth-covered market. His lockpicks cost about 13 ore each, so repeated failures become expensive.

Check Dexter's stock

Dexter works in the same southern market area and also sells lockpicks. Visit both merchants when preparing for a quest that contains locked doors or chests.

Save before a difficult lock

Make a manual save before spending several picks on a complex lock. This is especially useful before quest chests, where leaving to buy more picks can add a long return trip.

A repeatable solving method

Count the sliders, inspect which ones are already close to an edge, and build a small mental map of each connection. On a six-slider lock, spend the first moves learning relationships instead of chasing a nearly correct pattern.

Record the connections

Use a short note such as '2 moves 4 up' or '5 moves 1 down.' Once every useful connection is known, the puzzle becomes a sequence problem rather than guesswork.

Work backward from the target

If one slider can only be corrected by a move that disrupts two others, set that difficult slider first. Finish with sliders whose movement affects the fewest neighbors.

Reset a confused attempt

When too many experimental moves have made the state unreadable, reload the pre-lock save and repeat only the useful discoveries. A clean second attempt is usually faster than rescuing a random state.

FAQ

How does lockpicking work?

Move every vertical slider into its correct position. Moving one slider can move connected sliders, and forcing a slider beyond its limit damages the current lockpick.

Who teaches Lockpicking?

Fingers teaches Lockpicking from his elevated hut along the Old Camp inner wall. The Trained tier costs 10 LP and 100 ore and allows four failed moves before a pick breaks.

Where can I buy lockpicks?

Mordrag and Dexter sell lockpicks in the southern Old Camp market. Picks also appear as loot, so search prisoner homes, camps, and containers before paying for a large supply.
